1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn off the engine, and then, using a wrench, turn the negative battery terminal counterclockwise to loosen it. Do not loosen both battery terminals; remove the negative battery terminal only.
2. Lift up the terminal using the wrench. Be sure to wear protective eye wear because some battery acid may spill out when the terminal is disconnected.
3. Attach the negative terminal to something non-conductive, such as a piece of wood to keep the negative battery terminal from accidentally coming in contact with the positive terminal.
