1. Locate the keyless remote battery cover. For the 1999 Passat, it is usually a small, plastic cover that is held in place by a single screw. The screw is typically located on the back of the remote.
2. Remove the battery cover. Once you have located the screw, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove it. Be careful not to lose the screw.
3. Remove the old batteries. Once you have removed the battery cover, you will see the two old batteries. They are usually held in place by a small clip. Gently pry the batteries out of the clip and set them aside.
4. Insert the new batteries. Take the two new batteries and insert them into the remote control. Make sure that the positive (+) terminal of each battery is facing up.
5. Replace the battery cover. Once you have inserted the new batteries, replace the battery cover. Tighten the screw to hold the cover in place.
6. Test the remote. Press the buttons on the remote to make sure that they are working properly.
