What gases are present in a car airbag?

The primary gas present in a car airbag during inflation is nitrogen gas (N2). Nitrogen gas is chosen due to its non-flammable and relatively inert nature, ensuring safety and stability in the vehicle. It rapidly fills the airbag upon deployment to provide cushioning and protection to the occupants.

In some cases, compressed argon (Ar) gas or a mixture of nitrogen and argon may also be used as alternatives or in combination with nitrogen. These gases are considered safe and non-toxic, and they help maintain the structural integrity of the airbag during inflation and ensure reliable performance.
