Tools and Materials Needed
* New transmission fluid (Dexron III, approximately 3 quarts)
* Drain pan
* Funnel
* Wrench
* Rags
* Safety glasses
Instructions
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
3. Raise the vehicle using a jack and jack stands. (Make sure to set the parking brake before lifting the vehicle.)
4. Locate the transmission fluid drain plug. It is located on the bottom of the transmission pan.
5. Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug. Allow the old transmission fluid to drain into the pan.
6. Replace the drain plug once the old fluid has drained.
7. Locate the transmission fluid fill plug. It is located on the top of the transmission pan.
8. Remove the fill plug and insert the funnel.
9. Add the new transmission fluid. You will need to add approximately 3 quarts of fluid.
10. Check the fluid level using the dipstick. The fluid level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
11. Replace the fill plug.
12. Lower the vehicle off of the jack stands.

* Be careful not to spill any transmission fluid. It can be harmful to the environment.

Changing the transmission fluid in your 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 is a simple task that can be completed in about 30 minutes.
