1. Ensure that the vehicle is parked on level ground and the engine has been running for a few minutes to bring the fluid to operating temperature.
2. Open the hood of the vehicle.
3. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick, which is usually a yellow or orange loop-shaped handle near the back of the engine compartment.
4. Pull the dipstick out of the transmission fluid tube and wipe it clean with a clean rag.
5. Reinsert the dipstick into the tube until it is fully seated.
6. Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
7. If the fluid level is low, add the appropriate type of transmission fluid through the dipstick tube.
8. Reinsert the dipstick and check the fluid level again to make sure it is correct.
9. Replace the dipstick in the tube and close the hood of the vehicle.
