How do you repace brakes on a 2002 Saturn ion?

Tools Required

* Lug wrench

* Car jack and jack stands

* Combination wrench set

* Flat-head screwdriver

* Brake grease

* New brake pads and rotors

* C-clamp

Instructions

Step 1: Park the car on a level surface.

Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels.

Step 2: Locate the lug nuts on the wheels that you are going to be replacing the brakes on.

Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts, but do not remove them completely.

Step 3: Jack up the car and place it on jack stands.

Make sure that the car is stable before you proceed.

Step 4: Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket bolts.

There are two bolts that hold the caliper bracket in place. Use the wrench to remove these bolts.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket and the old brake pads.

Once the caliper bracket is removed, you will be able to take out the old brake pads.

Step 7: Inspect the rotors.

If the rotors are worn or damaged, they will need to be replaced.

Step 8: Install the new brake pads and rotor.

Make sure that the new brake pads are properly seated in the caliper. Slide the new rotor over the lug nuts and tighten them until they are snug.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper bracket and the bolts.

Tighten the caliper bracket bolts until they are snug.

Step 10: Put the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts.

Lower the car off the jack stands and remove the chocks.

Step 11: Test the brakes.

Pump the brake pedal a few times before driving the car. The brakes should feel firm and responsive.

You have now successfully replaced the brakes on your 2002 Saturn Ion.
