How do you change the power steering pump on a 2000 impala with police package?

Tools and Materials Needed

* Replacement power steering pump

* Power steering fluid

* Funnel

* Wrench set

* Socket set

* Pliers

* Rags

* Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Park your car in a safe location and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down completely before beginning work.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. This will prevent the engine from starting and causing injury while you are working.

3. Remove the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt is located on the front of the engine and drives the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and other accessories. To remove the serpentine belt, loosen the tensioner pulley and then slide the belt off of the pulleys.

4. Disconnect the power steering pressure line. The power steering pressure line is located on the top of the power steering pump. To disconnect the pressure line, use a wrench to loosen the fitting and then pull the line off of the pump.

5. Disconnect the power steering return line. The power steering return line is located on the bottom of the power steering pump. To disconnect the return line, use a wrench to loosen the fitting and then pull the line off of the pump.

6. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts. The power steering pump is mounted to the engine block with two bolts. Use a wrench to loosen the bolts and then remove them.

7. Remove the power steering pump. Once the mounting bolts have been removed, you can remove the power steering pump from the engine. Be careful not to spill any power steering fluid.

8. Install the new power steering pump. To install the new power steering pump, reverse the steps that you took to remove the old pump. Be sure to tighten all of the bolts and fittings securely.

9. Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid. The power steering reservoir is located on the top of the engine. Use a funnel to add power steering fluid to the reservoir until it is full.

10. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the power steering system to circulate the new fluid and remove any air bubbles.

11. Check the power steering fluid level and add more fluid if necessary. The power steering fluid level should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the reservoir.

12. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Tips:

* When disconnecting the power steering pressure line, be careful not to get any power steering fluid in your eyes. Power steering fluid is harmful if ingested or comes in contact with your eyes.

* If you spill any power steering fluid, be sure to clean it up immediately. Power steering fluid can damage paint and other surfaces.
