- New oil filter
- New oil (check owner's manual for correct type and amount)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Rags
Instructions:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool down for a few minutes.
2. Crawl underneath the vehicle and locate the oil drain plug. It is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan and has a bolt head.
3. Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug and loosen the plug with the wrench. Be careful, as the oil may be hot.
4. Allow the oil to drain completely into the pan. This may take several minutes.
5. While the oil is draining, you can remove the old oil filter. It is usually located near the top of the engine and is held in place by a bolt or cap.
6. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it onto the oil filter mount by hand. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
7. Once the oil has completely drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.
8. Use the funnel to add the new oil to the engine through the oil filler hole. Be sure to add the correct amount of oil as specified in the owner's manual.
9. Replace the oil filler cap and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil.
10. Check the oil level with the dipstick and ensure it is between the "full" and "add" marks.
Additional Tips:
- You can make this process easier by using a ramps or jack stands to raise your vehicle.
- If you are uncomfortable changing your oil, you can always take it to a qualified mechanic.
- Be sure to dispose of the old oil and filter properly. Many auto parts stores offer recycling services for these materials.
