Where is the thermostat located and how do you replace it on a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus?

Thermostat Location

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing, which is at the front of the engine block, below the water pump.

Tools Needed

- Phillips screwdriver

- Flat-blade screwdriver

- Channel-lock pliers

- Drain pan

- Funnel

- New thermostat (Stant 13368A)

Procedure

1. Allow the engine to cool down completely.

2. Place a drain pan under the radiator petcock.

3. Open the radiator petcock and drain the coolant from the radiator and engine block.

4. Once the coolant has drained, close the radiator petcock.

5. Remove the two Phillips screws that secure the thermostat housing cover.

6. Pry off the thermostat housing cover using the flat-blade screwdriver.

7. Remove the thermostat and gasket from the housing.

8. Clean the housing and gasket mating surfaces.

9. Install the new thermostat and gasket in the housing.

10. Replace the thermostat housing cover and secure it with the two Phillips screws.

11. Refill the radiator with coolant.

12. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature.

13. Check for leaks around the thermostat housing.
