1. Make sure that there are no actual issues with your car's engine or emission system. If there are any underlying problems, the check engine light will come back on after you reset it.
2. Locate the OBD-II port in your vehicle. It's usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side.
3. Connect an OBD-II scanner to the port. These can be purchased online or at automotive stores.
4. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without starting the engine).
5. Follow the prompts on the scanner to clear the check engine light.
6. Once the check engine light has been reset, turn off the ignition key and then restart the engine to verify that the light is off.
If the check engine light does not go off, or if it comes back on after a short while, it's recommended that you have a certified mechanic diagnose and repair the underlying problem.
