Tools and Materials Needed
- New serpentine belt
- 14 mm socket
- Ratcheting wrench
- Breaker bar (optional)
Instructions
1. Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood of your Corolla and locate the battery, which is usually found on the passenger side.
- Disconnect the negative terminal by loosening the bolt that secures the terminal to the battery post.
2. Locate the serpentine belt
- The serpentine belt is a long, thin, black belt that wraps around several pulleys on the front of the engine.
3. Loosen the tensioner pulley
- Use a 14 mm socket and ratcheting wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley. This will release tension on the belt, making it easier to remove.
4. Remove the old belt
- Slide the old belt off of the pulleys.
5. Install the new belt
- Place the new belt around the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft pulley at the bottom.
- Make sure the belt is seated correctly in all the grooves on the pulleys.
6. Tension the belt
- Use a 14 mm socket and ratcheting wrench to tension the belt. Tighten the tensioner pulley until the belt has about 1/2 inch of play when you press on it with your thumb.
7. Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery post and tighten the bolt.
8. Start the engine and check for proper operation
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations. If everything seems to be working properly, you can close the hood and replace the tools.
