Special Tools Needed:
- Spark plug gap tool (0.055-0.060 in.)
- Spark plug socket
- Ratchet
- Short and medium extensions
- Torque wrench
- Rags
- Blow dryer (optional)
Instructions:
1. Park the car in a well-ventilated area and allow the engine to cool down completely.
2. Remove the spark plug wires. To do this, simply pull up on the wire cap and twist it until it comes off. Be careful not to drop the wires into the engine bay.
3. Remove the old spark plugs. Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the spark plugs. Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine bay.
4. Inspect the old spark plugs. Look for signs of wear, such as erosion, deposits, or fouling. This can give you an idea of the condition of your engine.
5. Check the gap on the new spark plugs. Use a spark plug gap tool to make sure the gap is set to the correct measurement. The gap is measured from the center electrode of the spark plug to the grounded side electrode.
6. Install the new spark plugs. Place the new spark plugs into the spark plug holes and thread them in by hand until they are seated. Then, use the spark plug socket and ratchet to tighten the spark plugs until they are snug. Be careful not to overtighten the spark plugs, as this can damage the cylinder head threads.
7. Re-install the spark plug wires. Push the spark plug wires down onto the spark plugs until they snap into place. Make sure the wires are securely connected to the spark plugs before starting the engine.
8. Start the engine and check for leaks. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations that could indicate a spark plug leak. If you hear or see any leaks, turn off the engine and re-tighten the spark plugs.
Tips:
- When removing the spark plugs, be careful not to drop them into the engine bay. If a spark plug does drop into the engine bay, use a magnet or a long reach tool to retrieve it.
- When installing the new spark plugs, be sure to tighten them to the correct torque specification. The correct torque specification for the 1998 Corvette is 15-20 ft-lbs.
- If you have difficulty removing the spark plug wires, you can use a blow dryer to heat up the wires. This will make them more flexible and easier to remove.
By following these steps, you can easily and safely change the spark plugs on your 1998 Chevrolet Corvette.
