Tools and Materials:
- OEM Toyota Highlander trailer hitch kit (includes hitch, bolts, washers, instructions, etc.)
- Socket wrench set
- Torque wrench
- Jack or ramps
- Safety glasses and gloves
Step 1: Preparation
- Park your Highlander on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- If possible, elevate the rear of the vehicle using a jack or ramps for better access underneath.
- Refer to the vehicle owner's manual for proper lifting instructions.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.
Step 2: Locate Hitch Mounting Points
- Underneath the rear of the Highlander, locate the pre-marked hitch mounting points near the rear bumper. These may be covered by plastic covers.
- Remove the plastic covers if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Bumper and Fascia
- Remove the bolts securing the bumper and fascia (decorative panel) to the body of the vehicle.
- Some models may require the removal of taillights or other components. Follow the instructions in the OEM hitch kit.
Step 4: Install Hitch Brackets
- Align the hitch brackets with the mounting points. They should fit into position.
- Secure the hitch brackets using the provided bolts, washers, and nuts. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque as stated in the installation instructions.
Step 5: Reattach Bumper and Fascia
- Reattach the bumper and fascia by aligning them with the corresponding mounting points.
- Secure the bolts removed earlier, tightening them to the recommended torque.
Step 6: Connect Electrical Components
- Connect the vehicle's electrical wiring to the hitch's wiring harness according to the wiring diagram provided in the OEM hitch kit.
- This is usually accomplished by splicing into existing wiring near the taillights.
- Secure the wiring connections with electrical tape or connectors included in the kit.
Step 7: Test the Hitch
- Before using the trailer hitch, ensure it's properly installed and the electrical connections are working.
- Attach a trailer or other accessory and verify the lights and signals function correctly.
Step 8: Maintenance
- Regularly inspect the hitch and wiring for any signs of damage, including loose bolts, corrosion, or broken connections.
- Ensure that trailer hitches are properly loaded to comply with weight limits specified by Toyota and the trailer's manufacturer.
Remember, the exact installation process may vary slightly based on the Highlander model and year, so it's important to carefully follow the instructions provided with your specific OEM trailer hitch kit. If you're unfamiliar with vehicle maintenance, it's recommended to consult a professional mechanic for assistance.
