1. Prepare the necessary tools and acquire a new oil filter and replacement oil.
2. Locate the oil filter beneath the vehicle. It is usually near the bottom of the engine, on the driver's side.
3. Place an oil drain pan under the oil filter.
4. Use a filter wrench to loosen the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
5. Remove the oil filter and inspect the gasket for damage or leaks.
6. Apply a thin coat of new engine oil to the gasket of the new filter.
7. Screw on the new oil filter until it is snug. Do not over-tighten the filter.
8. Replace the oil drain plug.
9. Tighten the oil drain plug until it is snug.
10. Add new engine oil to the engine.
11. Check the oil level with the dipstick.
12. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
13. Check for leaks under the vehicle.
14. Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level.
2002 Toyota Avalon L4 Engine

2. Locate the oil filter at the bottom of the engine.
3. Place an oil drain pan under the oil filter.
4. Loosen the oil filter using a filter wrench.
5. Remove the old oil filter and dispose of it properly.
6. Apply a thin coat of new engine oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
7. Screw on the new oil filter until it is snug. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
8. Replace the oil drain plug.
9. Tighten the oil drain plug until it is snug.
10. Add new engine oil to the engine.
11. Check the oil level using the dipstick.
12. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
13. Check for leaks under the vehicle.
14. Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level.
