- Clogged Drain Tube: The air conditioner evaporator unit produces condensation when the AC is running. This water usually drains out through a drain tube that leads to the outside of the vehicle. If the drain tube is clogged, water can back up and overflow into the passenger footwell.
- Faulty Evaporator Housing Cover Gasket: The evaporator cover is located beneath the dashboard on the passenger side and is sealed with a gasket. If this gasket fails or is damaged, water from the evaporator can leak onto the floor.
In some cases, it is possible to fix this problem yourself.
Cleaning the Drain Tube:
1. Locate the drain tube under the vehicle on the passenger side. It is usually near the firewall and may have a cap on the end.
2. Remove the cap and use a wire hanger or pipe cleaner to clear any blockages in the tube.
Replacing the Evaporator Cover Gasket:
1. Open the hood and remove the windshield wipers and cowl.
2. Locate the evaporator cover gasket beneath the windshield on the passenger side.
3. Remove the old gasket and replace it with a new one.
If you are not comfortable performing these repairs yourself, it is best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
