Although the Mk2 had power steering factory fitted. The Mk1 Transit van didn't have power steering as an option. However its possible to fit power steering parts from modern vehicles.
The most common method involves using the steering column and power steering rack from a Ford Granada or Sierra.
Before you start:
- Before beginning this task, ensure you have all of the necessary tools and parts, including the power steering rack and column, as well as any mounting brackets or other necessary parts.
-Disconnect the battery.
-Jack up the front of the van and place it on axle stands.
-Prepare all the necessary tools.
1. Remove the steering column from the van.
Disconnect steering linkage
Remove the steering wheel
Remove column upper and lower nuts and bolts
- Unscrew the steering column mounting bracket. Disconnect the steering shaft.
2. Remove the old steering rack.
Disconnect the power steering pipes
Remove the 4 nuts/bolts holding the rack in place
Remove the track-rod ends from the steering arms.
Remove the steering rack
3. Install the new power steering rack.
Install the track rod ends into the new steering arms
Bolt the steering rack in place
Connect up the power steering pipes
4. Install the new steering column.
Reconnect the steering shaft to the new column.
Bolt the new column in place with upper and lower nuts and bolts.
Reconnect the steering linkage
Replace the steering wheel
5. Connect the power steering hoses.
6. Bleed the power steering system.
7. Reconnect the battery.
8. Enjoy the new power steering in your Mk1 Transit van!
Additional Tips:
- If you want the power steering to really "sing" you could swap out the old "worm an peg" steering box with a ZF style steering rack from a Capri, the Transit is a little wider than the capri so the rack will need lengthening slightly so as not to put to much offset on the track rod ends but it works superbly for a bit more effort.
- Ensure that all of the power steering components are securely fastened and that all of the hoses are properly connected before operating the vehicle.
