Does your 50 hp mercury have an alternator?
The majority of 50 horsepower Mercury outboard motors DO NOT have an alternator to charge a battery. These outboards are designed to primarily power smaller recreational boats that do not require a significant amount of electrical power. Instead, they rely on a charging system that utilizes a stator and rectifier to convert the mechanical energy from the engine's rotation into DC electrical energy. This energy is then used to charge the boat's battery and power essential electrical components such as ignition, lighting, and navigation systems.
