- New fuel filter.
- Fuel line disconnect tool available from auto parts stores
- Rags
- Safety goggles
- Pliers
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Small container to collect spilled fuel
Follow these steps:
1. Park your vehicle in a well-ventilated area and apply the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely.
2. Open the fuel cap to release the fuel tank pressure.
3. Locate the fuel filter. In the 1997 Hyundai Elantra, it is typically situated under the vehicle, near the fuel tank.
4. Place a small container under the fuel filter to collect any spilled fuel.
5. Use the fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel lines on both ends of the filter. If the fuel lines are difficult to disconnect, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry them off gently.
6. Use pliers to loosen and remove the mounting bracket that holds the fuel filter in place.
7. Remove the old fuel filter by pulling it out of the bracket.
8. Compare the old fuel filter with the new one to ensure they are the same size and shape.
9. Install the new fuel filter in the bracket, aligning the inlet and outlet ports correctly.
10. Tighten the mounting bracket to secure the new fuel filter in place.
11. Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel filter using the fuel line disconnect tool. Make sure the lines are securely connected.
12. Tighten any clamps or screws to secure the fuel lines in place.
13. Remove the small container used to collect spilled fuel.
14. Close the fuel cap.
15. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the fuel filter and fuel lines. If there are no leaks, the fuel filter replacement is complete.
Please note that if your 1997 Hyundai Elantra has an in-tank fuel filter, the process of changing it will be different and may involve removing the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions.
