How do you check the engine light codes for a 1993 Chevy cavalier?

Here's how to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) on a 1993 Chevy Cavalier:

1. Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine. Make sure all the lights on the dashboard are lit up.

2. Locate the diagnostic connector under the dashboard. It's usually located near the steering column, below the fuse panel.

3. Connect a code scanner or jumper wire to the diagnostic connector. If you're using a jumper wire, connect one end to the A terminal and the other end to the G terminal.

4. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position. Leave it there until the code scanner or jumper wire starts flashing, indicating that the Diagnostic Trouble Codes have been retrieved.

5. Count the flashes to retrieve the DTCs. Each DTC is represented by a series of flashes, with a short pause in between each code. The first flash indicates the tens digit, and the second flash indicates the ones digit. For example, three flashes followed by two flashes would represent DTC 32.

6. Write down the DTCs as you retrieve them. You'll need these codes to diagnose the problem with your vehicle.

7. Once you've retrieved all the DTCs, turn off the ignition and disconnect the code scanner or jumper wire.
