When charging a 12v car battery do you open the cell covers?

It is not recommended to open the cell covers of a 12V car battery while charging it. Car batteries are sealed units and opening the cell covers can release harmful fumes and cause damage to the battery. Charging a car battery should be done by a trained individual using the proper equipment.
