Tools Needed:
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- Belt tensioner tool (or wrench)
Instructions:
1. Safety Precautions: Before starting, ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the engine is cool to the touch.
2. Locate the Power Steering Belt: The power steering belt is usually located on the front side of the engine. Look for a thin serpentine belt that connects the crankshaft pulley to the power steering pump pulley.
3. Release the Belt Tension:
- Use the belt tensioner tool or a suitable wrench to release the tension on the power steering belt. There should be a pulley or idler that has a locking bolt attached to it.
- Loosen the locking bolt or nut on the pulley or idler.
- Once loosened, use the belt tensioner tool (turn clockwise) or wrench to move the pulley and loosen the tension on the power steering belt.
4. Remove the Old Belt:
- Once the tension is released, use a pair of pliers to remove the old power steering belt by slipping it off of the pulleys.
5. Inspect the Pulleys:
- While the old belt is off, inspect the pulleys for excessive wear or damage. Replace any damaged pulleys if necessary.
6. Install the New Belt:
- Place the new power steering belt around the crankshaft and power steering pump pulleys.
- Ensure that the belt is seated correctly in all grooves.
7. Re-tension the Belt:
- Use the belt tensioner tool or wrench to re-tension the belt. Refer to the vehicle's service manual for the proper belt tension specifications.
- Tighten the locking bolt or nut on the adjustable pulley or idler to hold the tension in place.
8. Double Check: Double check that the belt is properly seated in all grooves and that there is no excessive play or tension before starting the vehicle.
9. Start the Vehicle: Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Observe the belt to make sure it operates smoothly and there are no unusual noises or vibrations.
*Be sure to consult the vehicle's service manual for specific instructions and torque specifications for your particular Lexus ES300 model.
