Why does my temperature gage only work when the car is idling?

The most common reason the temperature gauge only works when the car is idling is that the alternator isn't charging properly. As the alternator slows down at lower RPMs, the battery power available becomes diminished. Because the temperature gauge relies on electrical power, it will be negatively affected by the loss of necessary electricity.

Another less likely possibility is that the temperature gauge itself has failed. This can be the case especially if the gauge works intermittently.
