Do you hook up the positive or negative wire first on a battery?

Always connect the negative terminal last! It will help you avoid sparks which could ignite any hydrogen gas near the battery. That means you should remove the negative cable first when disconnecting a battery (except when using a quick-disconnect system) and connect it last when installing a battery.
