Tools and materials:
-10mm socket
-13mm socket
-15mm socket
-17mm socket
-22mm socket
-Breaker bar
-Ratchet
-Extension bar
-Floor jack
-Jack stands
-Oil drain pan
-New transmission gasket (if needed)
Instructions:
1. Drain the transmission fluid. Place an oil drain pan under the transmission pan and remove the drain plug using a 17mm socket. Allow the transmission fluid to drain completely.
2. Disconnect the transmission linkage. Use a 10mm socket to remove the retaining clip that connects the transmission linkage to the shifter. Then, pull the linkage off the transmission.
3. Disconnect the speedometer cable. Use a 13mm socket to loosen the clamp that holds the speedometer cable to the transmission. Then, pull the cable out of the transmission.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors. Disconnect the electrical connectors that are connected to the transmission.
5. Remove the starter. Remove the two bolts that hold the starter to the transmission using a 15mm socket. Then, pull the starter out of the way.
6. Remove the driveshaft. Use a 15mm socket to remove the bolts that hold the driveshaft to the transmission and differential. Then, pull the driveshaft out of the transmission.
7. Support the transmission. Place a floor jack under the transmission to support it.
8. Remove the transmission bolts. Use a 17mm socket to remove the bolts that hold the transmission to the engine.
9. Remove the transmission. Once all of the bolts are removed, use the floor jack to raise the transmission until it clears the engine. Then, pull the transmission out of the vehicle.
10. Clean the mating surfaces. Clean the mating surfaces of the engine and transmission using a degreaser and a rag.
11. Install a new transmission gasket (if needed). Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to the mating surface of the engine block. Then, place a new transmission gasket on the engine block.
12. Install the transmission. Carefully lower the transmission into place and align it with the engine. Insert the transmission bolts and tighten them using a 17mm socket.
13. Reconnect transmission components. Reconnect the driveshaft, speedometer cable, transmission linkage, and electrical connectors in the reverse order of which they were removed.
14. Fill the transmission with fluid. Add the correct amount of transmission fluid to the transmission through the fill plug.
15. Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Start the vehicle and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the transmission and tighten the bolts if necessary.
16. Test drive the vehicle. Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure that the transmission is shifting smoothly and that there are no leaks.
