How do you get the transmission to line up with engine in a 1986 Chevy?

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake set..

2. Detach the transmission from the engine. To do this, remove the transmission pan and undo the bolts that hold the transmission to the engine.

3. Jack up the transmission and use a transmission jack to support its weight.

4. Install a pilot bushing into the rear of the crankshaft. The pilot bushing will help align the transmission with the crankshaft.

5. Slide the transmission input shaft into the pilot bushing. Make sure the input shaft is fully seated in the bushing.

6. Bolt the transmission to the engine. Use the bolts that you removed in step 2 to bolt the transmission to the engine.

7. Lower the transmission jack and reinstall the transmission pan.

8. Add transmission fluid to the vehicle.

9. Test the transmission by shifting it through all gears.
