Bump starting, also known as push starting or pop starting, is a method of starting an engine by providing initial momentum to overcome its static resistance. This momentum is acquired by pushing or towing the vehicle, allowing the vehicle's inertia to turn the engine's crankshaft over, engaging the starter motor or causing it to engage and initiate normal ignition and engine operation.
If the starter motor is completely faulty or non-functional, bump starting the engine may no longer be possible. This includes situations where the starter motor does not engage the flywheel at all, is unable to turn the engine due to excessive mechanical resistance, or the starter motor does not supply the necessary electrical power to activate the ignition system.
