How much electricity comes from renewable sources at present?

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy contributed about 26% of global electricity generation in 2020. Hydropower accounts for the largest share (16% of total global electricity generation in 2020), followed by wind (6%) and solar photovoltaics (4%). The remainder includes geothermal, biomass, and marine energy.

It's worth noting that these figures represent global averages, and the share of electricity from renewable sources can vary significantly between countries and regions. Some areas with favorable locations and supportive policies have already achieved much higher levels of renewable energy penetration.
