The single-stage system uses a single impact sensor at the front of the vehicle to detect a collision. If the impact is hard enough, the sensor sends a signal to the airbag controller, which deploys the airbags. The passenger side airbag sensor is installed in the engine bay, below the battery, and the driver’s side airbag sensor is installed in the area under the dashboard, on the passenger side.
The dual-stage system is similar to the single-stage system, but it uses two impact sensors, one at the front and one at the side of the vehicle. The idea behind this system is to use additional information in the event of an accident, thus enabling a better control over the deployment of the occupant protection system. The impact sensor at the front is installed as in the single-stage system. The front side impact sensor is installed into the side wall of the instrument panel near the A pillar. The passenger side airbag sensor is installed in the engine bay, below the battery.
