2. Check the reverse light switch. The reverse light switch is located on the transmission. To check the switch, crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission. The reverse light switch will be a small, cylindrical-shaped object with two wires connected to it. Disconnect the wires from the switch and use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity. If the switch is not working properly, replace it with a new switch.
3. Check the wiring. If the reverse light bulbs and the reverse light switch are both working properly, then the problem may be with the wiring. To check the wiring, use a multimeter to test the voltage at the reverse light socket. If there is no voltage, then the problem is with the wiring between the reverse light switch and the taillight assembly. You will need to trace the wiring and repair any damaged or broken wires.
4. Check the fuse. The reverse lights are also protected by a fuse. If the fuse is blown, then the reverse lights will not work. To check the fuse, open the fuse box and locate the fuse for the reverse lights. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new fuse of the same amperage.
