What does the tail rotor of a helicopter do?

Counteracts Torque from the Main Rotor

* The main rotor of a helicopter produces a tremendous amount of torque, or twisting force.

* If this torque were not counteracted, the helicopter would spin uncontrollably.

* The tail rotor does just that – it creates thrust in the opposite direction of the main rotor, cancelling out its torque and keeping the helicopter stable.
