What is the fastest jet airplane?
The fastest jet airplane ever built is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. It was developed for the United States Air Force by the Lockheed Corporation and entered service in 1964. The SR-71 was designed as a high-altitude, high-speed strategic reconnaissance aircraft and was capable of flying at speeds of over 2,190 miles per hour (3,520 km/h) at altitudes of over 85,000 feet (26,000 m). The SR-71 was retired from active service in 1998, but remains the fastest jet aircraft ever flown.
