The first practical turbocharger was developed and patented by Alfred Büchi in 1905.
However, the concept of using exhaust gas to drive a turbine is much older. The first recorded attempt at a turbocharger dates back to 1874 when Francis Herbert Wenham developed a system for powering an aircraft.
