Here's why:
* Accurate Reading: Checking the fluid level with the engine running can give you an inaccurate reading. The fluid can be hot and expanded, making it appear higher than it actually is.
* Safety: Hot transmission fluid can be dangerous. Checking it with the engine off eliminates this risk.
To check your transmission fluid level, follow these steps:
1. Park your car on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Let the engine cool down completely.
3. Locate the transmission dipstick. It's usually near the back of the engine, under the hood.
4. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag.
5. Insert the dipstick all the way back in and then pull it out again.
6. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. It should be within the "Full" marks.
If the fluid level is low, you may need to add transmission fluid. If the fluid is dirty or smells burnt, you should have your transmission inspected by a mechanic.
