Tappets (or Hydraulic Lifters)
* How they work: Tappets are responsible for transferring the force from the camshaft to the valves. They have a small gap that needs to be filled with oil for proper operation.
* Noise: When tappets wear out, the gap can become too large, causing a clicking or tapping sound that often changes with engine speed. If they're not getting enough oil, the noise can be even more pronounced.
Other potential causes of noise on top of a Peugeot 207 engine:
* Valve train issues: Worn valve springs, sticky valve guides, or worn rocker arms can also create noise.
* Loose components: A loose timing chain or other components in the valve train can cause rattling sounds.
* Other engine problems: Although less likely, issues like a leaking head gasket or detonation (premature ignition) could also cause top-end noise.
What you should do:
1. Check the oil level: Make sure the oil level is correct and that the oil is clean. Low oil level can cause tappet noise.
2. Listen carefully: Does the noise change with engine speed? A tapping noise that gets louder with RPM is more likely a tappet issue.
3. Consult a mechanic: If you're not comfortable diagnosing the problem yourself, take your car to a qualified mechanic. They can inspect the engine and determine the exact cause of the noise.
Important: Don't ignore engine noise. A small problem can quickly escalate into a bigger and more expensive repair.
