* Port and Starboard: These terms come from nautical navigation. "Port" refers to the left side of a ship when facing forward, and "starboard" refers to the right.
* Aviation Terminology: Aviation adopted these terms for consistency. So, the left engine of an aircraft is considered the "port engine," and the right engine is the "starboard engine."
Note: On some aircraft, particularly smaller planes, the engines might be located on top of the wings (above the fuselage) rather than on the sides. However, the terminology "port" and "starboard" still applies.
