Can you replace head gasket on 2.5 Subaru with engine in vechicle?

While technically possible to replace a head gasket on a 2.5L Subaru engine without removing the engine, it's extremely difficult, time-consuming, and not recommended for most people. The amount of space and accessibility within the engine bay of a Subaru is very limited, making this a significantly more challenging job than doing it with the engine out.

Here's why it's discouraged:

* Limited Access: Reaching all the necessary bolts and components is incredibly difficult with the engine in the vehicle. You'll likely need specialized tools and a lot of patience (and potentially broken knuckles).

* Increased Risk of Damage: The tight quarters significantly increase the chance of accidentally damaging other components during the process.

* Difficulty in Thorough Cleaning: Properly cleaning the mating surfaces of the head and block is crucial for a successful head gasket replacement. This is much easier to accomplish with the engine out.

* Time Commitment: It will take significantly longer to do this job in the vehicle, potentially doubling or tripling the time required compared to removing the engine.

In short: Unless you're extremely experienced and have the right tools, including specialized extensions and swivel sockets, it's strongly advised to remove the engine to replace the head gasket. The added difficulty and risk of damaging other components far outweigh any potential time savings. The cost savings from not paying a mechanic for engine removal might be negated by the cost of repairing additional damage.
