What does a fuel tank sending unit do?

A fuel tank sending unit measures the level of fuel in a vehicle's fuel tank and sends that information to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. It's essentially a float and resistor mechanism (or sometimes a capacitance-based sensor) that translates the fuel level into an electrical signal that the gauge can interpret and display.
