Why is the engine management light flashing?

A flashing engine management light (also known as a check engine light) indicates a serious problem that requires immediate attention. It means that there's a potentially damaging misfire occurring in one or more cylinders. Continuing to drive with a flashing light could cause:

* Internal engine damage: A misfire can lead to damaged pistons, valves, or catalytic converters.

* Reduced fuel economy: A misfire wastes fuel and reduces efficiency.

* Increased emissions: A malfunctioning engine will produce more pollutants.

Possible causes of a flashing engine management light:

* Ignition system problems: Faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or wiring.

* Fuel system issues: Problems with fuel injectors, fuel pump, or clogged fuel filter.

* Engine sensor malfunctions: A faulty oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, or crankshaft position sensor.

* Severe engine mechanical problem: Low compression, internal damage, or valve train issues.

Do not ignore a flashing engine management light. Pull over safely as soon as possible and have your vehicle checked by a qualified mechanic. Driving with a flashing light risks causing significant and costly damage to your engine. They can use an OBD-II scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored by the car's computer to pinpoint the exact problem.
