To drain the coolant:
1. Locate the petcock: It's typically a small brass or plastic valve near the bottom of the radiator, often on the driver's side. It might be a screw-type or a lever-type.
2. Prepare for draining: Place a drain pan underneath the radiator to catch the coolant. Coolant is toxic, so wear gloves and eye protection.
3. Open the petcock: If it's a screw-type, carefully turn it counter-clockwise (left) to open it. If it's a lever-type, carefully move the lever to the open position.
4. Drain the coolant: Allow the coolant to drain completely into the pan. This can take some time.
5. Close the petcock: Once the coolant has drained, carefully turn the screw-type petcock clockwise (right) to close it or move the lever to the closed position.
6. Dispose of the coolant properly: Coolant is harmful to the environment and shouldn't be poured down the drain. Take it to a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used coolant.
Important Note: Before draining, make sure the engine is completely cool. Hot coolant can cause severe burns. Also, consult your owner's manual for the specific location of the drain petcock and any special instructions. Some vehicles might have a different draining procedure.
