Before you begin:
* Gather your supplies: New oil filter (make sure it's the correct one for your Escape), new oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and quantity), oil filter wrench (cap type or strap type often works best), wrench for the drain plug (usually a 13mm or 14mm – check your manual), drain pan, jack and jack stands (or ramps), rags or paper towels, funnel. Gloves are recommended.
* Warm up the engine: Run the engine for 5-10 minutes to warm the oil, making it flow more easily. Be careful not to burn yourself.
* Safety first: Work on a level surface, engage the parking brake firmly, and use jack stands if you're lifting the vehicle. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Steps:
1. Locate the oil filter: It's usually located on the passenger side of the engine, near the front. It's a cylindrical canister.
2. Position the drain pan: Place the drain pan under the oil drain plug, located on the oil pan (bottom of the engine).
3. Remove the drain plug: Use the appropriate wrench to carefully loosen and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain completely – this may take 15-20 minutes. Be careful as the oil will be hot.
4. Remove the oil filter: Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter. It might be a bit tight. Have a rag ready as some oil will spill.
5. Lubricate the new filter's gasket: Lightly lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with fresh oil. This helps create a good seal and prevents damage during installation.
6. Install the new filter: Screw the new oil filter on by hand until it's snug. Then tighten it according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually about ¾ to 1 full turn after the gasket makes contact). Do not overtighten.
7. Replace the drain plug: Once the oil has drained completely, replace the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (check your owner's manual). Don't overtighten.
8. Lower the vehicle: Carefully lower the vehicle if you used a jack.
9. Add new oil: Use a funnel to add the correct amount of new oil (specified in your owner's manual).
10. Check the oil level: Use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if needed, to reach the "full" mark.
11. Run the engine: Run the engine for a few minutes. Then, check for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
12. Check the oil level again: After running the engine, turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes. Check the oil level again and add more if necessary.
13. Dispose of used oil properly: Take the used oil and filter to a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts them.
Remember to always consult your owner's manual for specific instructions and torque specifications related to your 2009 Ford Escape. If you're uncomfortable performing this task yourself, take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
