1. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir. This is usually a small, clear or translucent plastic reservoir. It's often located under the hood, near the power steering pump. Consult your owner's manual for the exact location; it might be labeled.
2. Start the car. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the fluid and get an accurate reading. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to ensure the pump circulates the fluid. Then turn off the engine.
3. Inspect the fluid level. Look at the reservoir. Most have minimum and maximum fill lines (often marked "MIN" and "MAX"). The fluid level should be somewhere between these lines when the engine is off. The fluid should be a reddish or amber color. If it's dark brown or black, it's likely contaminated and needs to be flushed and replaced.
4. Don't overfill. Overfilling can be just as bad as underfilling.
Important Note: If you can't find the reservoir easily or are unsure about the fluid level, consult your owner's manual or a qualified mechanic.
