Why is my engine light flashing?

A flashing engine light is a serious warning sign indicating a potentially damaging problem that needs immediate attention. It means your car's computer has detected a severe malfunction that could cause damage to your engine if you continue driving. Do not ignore a flashing engine light.

Possible causes are numerous, but some of the most common include:

* Misfire: A cylinder isn't firing properly, leading to rough running, decreased power, and potential damage to the catalytic converter. This is a very common reason for a flashing light.

* Catalytic Converter Issues: A malfunctioning catalytic converter can cause overheating and damage to the exhaust system.

* Severe Air/Fuel Ratio Problem: This can be caused by a faulty sensor, a leak in the intake system, or other issues. Running lean (too much air) can severely damage engine components.

* Ignition System Failure: Problems with ignition coils, spark plugs, or wiring can cause misfires and other issues.

What you should do:

1. Pull over safely as soon as possible. Do not continue driving with a flashing engine light.

2. Turn off the engine. Continuing to run the engine could exacerbate the problem and cause more significant damage.

3. Have your vehicle towed or transported to a qualified mechanic. Attempting to diagnose and repair the problem yourself without proper knowledge and tools could be dangerous.

4. Do not attempt to start your vehicle again until it has been inspected by a mechanic. Starting the car and continuing to drive could worsen the damage.

The mechanic will use an OBD-II scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in your car's computer. These codes will help them identify the specific problem causing the flashing engine light. Without knowing the specific codes, it's impossible to pinpoint the exact cause.
