You should stop and investigate immediately if:
* The temperature gauge approaches the redline or maximum reading. This indicates a serious overheating issue.
* The temperature consistently stays above 220°F (104°C). Prolonged high temperatures can cause significant engine damage.
* You notice steam or other unusual signs of overheating. This includes white smoke from the exhaust, unusual noises from the engine, or the smell of burning coolant.
Don't wait until the engine is severely overheating. Doing so risks catastrophic damage, including warped cylinder heads, cracked engine blocks, and blown head gaskets – all incredibly expensive repairs. If you're concerned about the temperature, it's always better to err on the side of caution and stop to let the engine cool down.
