The engine itself is, of course, under the hood. There's no single, universally-placed identifying number *on* the engine itself like there is for the VIN. However, the engine block *might* have a casting number stamped into it, but that's not a readily accessible, easily-found number like the VIN. It would require some searching around the engine block itself.
