How do you tell two bolt from four main on small block Chevy without dropping the oil pan?

You can't definitively tell a two-bolt main from a four-bolt main small-block Chevy without dropping the oil pan (or at least partially removing it to see the main caps). The differences are entirely on the block itself, below the pan. Exterior visual clues are unreliable and often misleading due to modifications.
