What did olden day cars run on?

Early cars ran on a variety of fuels, depending on the era and technological advancements. The most common were:

* Gasoline: This quickly became the dominant fuel, though early gasoline was often of lower quality and less refined than what we use today.

* Steam: Some of the very earliest automobiles were powered by steam engines, using water heated to produce steam to drive the vehicle. These were less practical than gasoline-powered cars due to their long start-up times and complex systems.

* Electricity: Electric cars existed in the early days of automobiles, but their limited range and long recharging times held them back from widespread adoption.

So while gasoline eventually won out, the early automotive landscape was more diverse in terms of fuel sources.
