Who invented the first motorcar?

There's no single inventor of the first motorcar, as its development was a gradual process with contributions from many people. However, Karl Benz is generally credited with inventing the first practical automobile in 1886. His Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely considered the first true automobile to be mass-produced. While others had built self-propelled vehicles before, Benz's was the first to be commercially successful and truly practical for everyday use.
