1) The distributor rotor should be pointing to the number one spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap.
2) The number one piston should be at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. This can be verified by removing the spark plug from the number one cylinder and inserting a long, thin object (like a screwdriver) into the spark plug hole. When the piston reaches TDC, the object will stop moving.
3) The crankshaft pulley should be aligned with the 0-degree mark on the timing tab.
4) The distributor cap should be installed so that the rotor is pointing to the number one spark plug wire terminal.
5) The spark plug wires should be installed in the correct firing order, which is 1-6-5-4-3-2.
6) Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. The timing should be set to 0 degrees +/- 2 degrees.
