Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement power brake booster
- Socket wrench set
- Wrenches
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Brake fluid
- Funnel
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Procedure:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. This is important to prevent any electrical accidents while working on the brake system.
3. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir cap and use a turkey baster to remove most of the brake fluid. This will help prevent spills and make it easier to remove the brake lines from the booster.
4. Use a wrench to loosen the brake lines from the power brake booster. Be careful not to drop the brake lines or allow any brake fluid to leak out.
5. Remove the nuts or bolts that hold the power brake booster to the firewall. There may be two or three nuts or bolts, depending on your vehicle model.
6. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the power brake booster.
7. Carefully remove the power brake booster from the engine compartment. Be careful not to damage the brake lines or any other components in the engine compartment.
8. Install the new power brake booster in the reverse order of removal. Make sure to tighten the nuts or bolts that hold the booster to the firewall securely.
9. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the power brake booster.
10. Reconnect the brake lines to the power brake booster. Tighten the brake line fittings securely.
11. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with new brake fluid.
12. Test the brakes by pressing the brake pedal several times. The pedal should feel firm and should stop the vehicle effectively.
13. Recheck all of the connections and make sure there are no leaks.
14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
15. Start the vehicle and test the brakes again.
Note: It is important to bleed the brake system after replacing the power brake booster to remove any air from the system and ensure proper brake function. Consult the vehicle repair manual for specific instructions on how to bleed the brake system for your vehicle.
