How do you change the starter in a 1992 Mitsubishi diamante LS 3L v6 dohc?

Tools needed:

- 12- point 17mm socket

- 17mm wrench

- 12- point 14mm socket

- Short and long extensions

- Small flat-head screwdriver

- Breaker bar

- New starter

Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery using the 10mm wrench. This will prevent any sparks from occurring that can lead to damage.

2. Remove the upper splash shields near the exhaust manifold using the 17mm socket. The bolts will come out of a white plastic clip, which can often break. Don’t worry. Just get the bolt part out. This will give you access to the right exhaust manifold bolt.

3. Remove the bolt connecting the starter to the transmission using the 17mm socket and short extension. This is a 17mm bolt with coarse, large threads. The head of the bolt will be in the hole in the left bracket bolt.

4. Remove the bolt connecting the ground cable wire connector near the starter solenoid using the 14mm socket and short extension. This is a thin, copper-looking metal.

5. Now you can gently shake the starter loose by hitting the solenoid area with the flat-head screwdriver. Take care not to hit anything fragile such as the engine computer.

6. Pry off the black rubber covering using the flat-head screwdriver. Be extremely careful not to rip the wiring underneath! Pry off 2 inches worth of the covering.

7. Take the 17mm socket and short extension and loosen, but do not remove, the nut for the positive battery cable. The wire will have a black plastic covering at its end.

8. Pry off 1 inch of the white covering to expose the wire.

9. Gently twist and pull the end of the wire off of the starter. Once off of the starter, don’t worry if the white rubber covering comes off.

10. Remove the last 17mm bolt on the left bracket connecting the starter to the transmission. This bolt is coarse-threaded and should be removed first in the removal process.

11. Remove the starter by wiggling it around slightly until it can be tilted forward and removed. If the starter is stuck in the transmission, take a thin pry tool and break it free to prevent damage.

12. Install the new starter by replacing these steps.

13. Re-install the negative battery terminal.
